A road traffic accident is an accident involving personal injury occurring on the public highway (including pavements) in which a road vehicle is involved. Road traffic accident claims are frequent because road traffic accidents are routine: most people are involved in at least one road accident in their life.
UK Road Traffic Accident Statistics
Recent road traffic accident statistics show that in 2007: 646 pedestrians were killed in road accidents; this was 22 per cent of all deaths from road accidents, a 78 per cent decrease from 40 years ago when pedestrian fatalities were at 2,964.
The total number of deaths in road accidents fell by 7 per cent to 2,946 in 2007 in Britain from 3,172 in 2006. Fatalities in this regard have remained fairly constant over the last ten years, though.
Nearly half of people killed in road accidents in 2007 were car users. Cyclists and motorcyclists, respectively, represented 5 and 20 per cent of those killed. Those in buses, coaches and other vehicles accounted for 5 per cent of road deaths.
The UK has a good record for road safety compared with most EU countries, government figures reveal. In 2006 it had one of the lowest road death rates in the EU, at 5.4 per 100,000 of population. The UK rate was also lower than the rates for other major industrialised countries such as the US – 14.3 per 100,000 – and Japan – 5.7 per 100,000.
It is estimated there are more than 300,000 injuries caused by traffic accidents every year.
Whiplash
Whiplash is one of the most common causes of road accident claims. Whiplash is caused by the sudden impact of a road accident when the head is thrown back quickly and violently. The after effects of whiplash can be extreme: neck pain, headaches, back pain, sickness and loss of vision. In some cases motorists make a quick recovery in others the injuries can be prolonged.
