Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone has told how he overcame a serious neck injury to bring his new action movie The Expendables to our cinema screens.

The star of Rocky, Rambo and numerous other blockbusters has directed and is starring in the new summer action film The Expendables which features an all star cast of some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

The Expendables, to be released next month, puts together an incredible collection of Hollywood’s best loved tough guys on screen, for the first time together in one movie.

Starring along with Sylvester Stallone are Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke among others. The Expendables is likely to be a mammoth box office success.

The film about hired guns doing dirty work in South America features its fair share of fights and battle scenes. Filming was in fact so tough on the movie that Sylvester Stallone broke his neck.

The initial news of Stallone’s broken neck was greeted with suspicion though, with many films critics and fans suspecting that the news of Stallone’s injury was purely to drive media attention to the film.

However Sylvester Stallone in true Rocky style was not to be put down and later released X-rays showing how bad the neck injury he suffered during filming really was.

The Hollywood star’s injury was genuine alright and he had to undergo major surgery after he fractured his neck in a massive fight scene.

The injury to Sylvester Stallone also shows the dangers that many actors face on set recreating dangerous events, and not only face actors but stunt people too.

Clearly injuries to stunt men and women are numerous in the film production industry; an obvious occupational hazard in such a dangerous job. Also, it is worth remembering that in the case of Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis and others it is the actors who are often performing their own stunts on set, and risking injury to bring realism to their Hollywood entertainment roles.

Following his neck injury, Stallone, the 63-year-old star, later displayed a set of X-rays, taken at the California Marina Spine Centre, which revealed the extent of his nasty neck injury, a metal plate clearly on view in his neck.

“For the doubters and the haters, a picture is worth a thousand words. You walk the walk, you pay the price, said Sylvester Stallone.

“As bad as it was, at least we have it on film. The reason I was never seen in a neck brace is because I stayed at home for three weeks for it to heal,” Stallone added.

The Expendables, set to be released this year on August 13 pays tribute to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and 1990s, starring a big ensemble of action stars from that period, including Stallone himself. The plot consists of mercenaries being sent on a mission to a South American country to overturn a brutal dictator but who soon find themselves in the firing line, with a traitor amongst them.

The Expendables is also notable for the return to the screen of Arnold Schwarzenegger – or Arnie – as fans like to call him.

Sly says he was keen to make The Expendables to bring back some old fashioned entertainment to the big screen, with actors doing their own stunts and plenty of on screen action but he was no doubt hoping to stay injury free.

Still, Sly Stallone is no stranger to injuries while making films. He was also injured during the making of Rocky Balboa, the last in the Rocky boxing film series, injured with real boxing injuries from sparring and training, taking quite a few heavy blows to the head during the fight scenes. The star has admitted that despite his legendary physical shape, his age is now making it harder to make high octane actions films, without the risk of injury.
