Criminal Injury Compensation Claims

Contact The Personal Injury Bureau and we can put a solicitor on your case that can help you receive the compensation you deserve for your criminal injury.

Criminal Injury is compensated for by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).

The level of compensation you can receive depends upon the nature of your criminal injury and how severe your injury is. However, the minimum compensation payout is £1,000 and in the most serious cases compensation can result in payments in the region of several hundred thousand pounds.

The types of crimes and criminal injury for which you can claim for, includes:

Other criminal injuries you are likely to receive damage for include eye injuries, burns, loss of sight, facial injuries, dental damage, injuries to noses, arms, hands, back, legs. Some of the most serious and high paying compensation claims include injuries resulting in major paralysis and mental illness.

Eligibility For Compensation For Criminal Damage

To be considered for criminal injury compensation by the CICA you must have:

  • Been injured seriously enough to qualify for at least the minimum award.
  • Injured in an act of violence in England, Scotland or Wales. An offender does not have to have been convicted of or charged with the crime.
  • Made your application within two years of the incident that caused your injury. However, CICA might accept applications outside this limit if in your particular case it was not reasonable for an application form to have been submitted within two years of the incident and there would still be enough evidence to consider.

Awards are paid by cheque. Levels of compensation award range from a minimum of £1000 to a maximum of £500,000.

About The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA)

CICA is the government body responsible for administering the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme in England, Scotland and Wales, part of the Ministry of Justice and also providing a service on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The CICA provides a free service to victims of violent crime not to fully compensate them but aiming to recognise their suffering and give them some financial support that may help them move on.

How Long Will The Criminal Injury Claim Application Take?

As soon as the case is registered enquiries will begin, including police reports and medical reports,

It can take a year or more to make a final decision. More complex cases can take longer, especially if they involve loss of earnings or future medical expenses.

Wherever possible, the CICA settles applications by offering a single payment of compensation - a final award, although interim payments are possible in some cases.
